There is a vulnerability that happens when you strip away the heavy studio production, the backing tracks, and the crowd. What remains is the absolute core of the music: the artist, their instrument, and the truth of the song.

At Musica y Mezcal, we love diving deep into the production process, but we also crave the raw energy of live performance. We wanted to create a space where emerging artists could showcase their pure, unadulterated talent in an intimate setting.

Welcome to the Gastown Sessions.

The Concept: A Private Concert, Just for You

Inspired by the cozy, stripped-down magic of formats like NPR’s Tiny Desk, the Gastown Sessions bring that same level of intimacy behind closed doors. There is no live audience. There is no applause between tracks. It is just the artists in a room, performing directly for you, the viewer at home.

By removing the crowd, we remove the performance anxiety and the need for crowd-work. The result is a deeply personal, closed-door session where the musicians can get completely lost in their own sound.

The Rule of Three

To keep the energy focused and authentic, every Gastown Session follows a strict format:

  • Three Original Songs: A carefully curated mini-set that showcases the artist’s unique voice and songwriting ability.
  • One Continuous Take: No stopping, no punching in, and no studio magic to fix mistakes. It’s a live performance in its truest form. What you hear is exactly what happened in the room.
  • The Setup: We capture the magic using a dynamic, multi-angle three-camera setup, paired with pristine, studio-quality multitrack audio.

The Rawest Form of Discovery

As a platform dedicated to highlighting new talent and fresh sounds, the Gastown Sessions are our way of giving artists a beautiful, high-fidelity canvas to paint on. It is an invitation to sit in the front row—actually, to sit right in the middle of the room—and discover your next favorite band.

Grab your headphones, pour yourself something good, and experience the music exactly as it was meant to be played.
